The Big Island Challenge was started by the late JJ Logan in 1996. The original course was run from Anaeho`omalu to Keauhou and was change to it's current 31 mile course, Puako to Honokohau in 1999. The 2010 event was sponsored by Olukai Sandals and is a relay race, though 2 paddlers did the race solo.
